Our Approach to Packaging & Plastics Reduction
Our packaging decisions are guided by a simple goal: use less, design better and keep materials in circulation whenever possible. That means reducing unnecessary packaging, improving the recyclability and recycled content of our Sprouts Brand packaging and supporting reuse models that replace single‑use plastics altogether.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics
We’ve taken steps to eliminate unnecessary plastic and shift toward reuse models that support a more sustainable shopping experience.
One of the most visible changes has been the removal of single‑use plastic shopping bags, paired with expanded reusable bag options. By encouraging customers to bring their own bags or choose reusable alternatives, we’re helping reduce plastic use at checkout while supporting everyday habits that prevent waste.
We’re also focused on offering more ways to shop with less packaging throughout our stores—from bulk options that allow customers to purchase only what they need to reuse programs that replace disposable packaging altogether. Together, these efforts help reduce reliance on single‑use plastics and support a more circular approach to how products are packaged and purchased.
Designing Packaging for Circularity
Designing packaging for circularity starts upstream. For Sprouts Brand products, we focus on packaging that uses fewer materials, is designed to be curbside recyclable and incorporates recycled content where possible—helping keep materials in circulation longer.
We work to simplify packaging formats, reduce unnecessary components and move away from materials that are difficult to recycle. As part of this effort, we’ve transitioned out of polystyrene packaging in our egg and meat programs, replacing it with curbside‑recyclable alternatives.
As our packaging continues to evolve, we seek more sustainable packaging options that balance functionality, food safety and quality, and customer experience.
Reuse & Packaging Reduction
Reuse and reduced packaging are central to lowering our overall packaging footprint. Across our stores, we focus on offering shopping experiences that use less packaging and replace single‑use materials with reusable options wherever possible.
Our bulk scoop sections allow customers to purchase only what they need, with the option to bring their own containers. We also support reuse programs, such as reusable milk bottles, which replace disposable packaging with containers that can be returned to our stores and used again and again.
